In the Gutter

Amy, myself, and the Happy Husband and Wife played a game of 1980s Edition Trivial Pursuit tonight. We found a certain Sports and Leisure (green) question to be utterly inappropriate… well, ok… completely hysterical.

Sign Language

Absolutely brilliant! This is a must read! A sign language translator breaks ranks in Ukraine.

I’ve always wondered what that person in the little circle is saying. Maybe I should learn sign language. That could help.

UPDATE: A followup story on the events noted by Neeka. The translator’s management and co-workers supported her and have defied the government control of the news. It may sound odd to American ears, but in Ukraine the news broadcasters are saying things like “We are not lying any more.” This is another monumental shift in a post-Soviet country.



Ukrainian Election

Hundreds of thousands of people are demonstrating in the streets of Ukraine. Rumors of Russian troops with orders to shoot are swirling, and international observers are saying that the election was rife with fraud and abuse.

I’m following this mainly through the writings and personal accounts of Neeka and TulipGirl as well as the reporting of the Kyiv Post.

And Le Sabot Post-Moderne (Yes, it is written in English). Discoshaman is involved directly with the opposition and getting word out to the web.



Camera Obscura

This is just simply amazing. A blending of interior and exterior photography in a completely unique way.

Abelardo Morell has photographed images created using a camera obscura, the device which is the foundation for all modern photography.

Insomnia Linking

I really have horrible sleep patterns sometimes. I have been trying to fall asleep for a bit now, but I can’t. So I am sitting here making the rounds of the various blogs I read on a regular basis.

Here’s a few of the highlights:

My old roommate Curt ponders the freedoms of bachelor life as compared to those of married life. I get an honorable mention in the post as he dodges a question from his wife.

Amy lists her Top 5 Things she is thankful for as we approach the holiday. And in response to the end of her post, I simply will say Hook ‘em Horns!

Rachel gets a cup of coffee on the run in New Zealand.

Fred writes about autumn in Floyd County, respiratory systems, and passing along amazement to his students. By the way, autumn is not a season in Texas. We still have four seasons though: summer, hunting, Christmas, and spring.

Deb discusses toilet paper and continuity issues that she has discovered in the women’s restroom of the Rancho Cucamonga courthouse.

TulipGirl follows the Ukrainian elections. I’m linking to her November archive since there are multiple rather interesting posts about the events which have been unfolding there over the last days.

I’m also linking to the entire month because there are some rather yummy sounding recipes listed towards the start of the month. I have varied interests. International politics and food.



Unclear on the Concept

Today at work, I was rummaging in the medical supply drawer in search of some aspirin when I noticed that the thermometer was clearly labeled “Oral.”



Peace

I feel and understand this tonight.

Learning

I learned something new tonight: The treadmill in the local exercise room goes to at least 13% grade on its elevation. I was walking through an automatic program labeled as “Hills” on the machine. I become somewhat surprised and slightly alarmed as the readout moved quickly beyond 10.1%.



Power in the Storm

A steady rain is falling outside.
The sound of thunder is rolling by.
There’s a cleansing power in this storm.
A power which just might calm my mind.

Tonight I will listen to the rain.
Tonight I will sleep. I will rest. I will dream.

Tomorrow I will awake.

Holy Grilled Cheese

There is a lady who is selling a 10-year-old grilled cheese sandwich on eBay. She believes it contains the image of the Virgin Mary. I personally think it looks like an actress from the silent film era. I see a blonde with wavy hair looking upward, but maybe that’s just me.

eBay had originally pulled the auction from its site as a hoax but has since confirmed that the seller is for real. The auction was reinstated. Obviously, there are a number of fake bidders on something like this. Someone has bid $999,999,999.00, the highest amount possible on eBay.

The current owner of the miracle sandwich attributes $70,000 worth of casino wins to the presence of the Virgin Mary upon the toasted bread.

A number of entrepreneurs and jokesters have followed in the wake of this auction. My favorites so far: Elvis toast, George Bush tortilla, and a very cool piece of artwork of the Virgin Mary holding a grilled cheese sandwich.

I also like the fact that the standard eBay advertising about financing appears next to this item. Yes, I have a odd sense of humor.
